Position Function: We seek candidates with a doctorate in epidemiology or related discipline with strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively and congenially. Research areas of interest include but are not limited to chronic diseases, obesity, nutrition and precision nutrition, genetics, and infectious disease. Candidates should be skilled in teaching quantitative courses to students with a range of aptitude. Online teaching experience is desirable. Responsibilities will include developing curriculum, developing courses, teaching graduate and undergraduate students, developing and maintaining a research program, mentoring students in design, conduct, and analysis of epidemiological studies, and service to the university and profession. Faculty will contribute to a graduate health sciences program with a specialization in biostatistics and epidemiology; experience in curriculum development is desirable. Faculty will also contribute to a health science concentration with the BS in Data Science in the College of Science and Humanities.
Lifelong learning at Ball State University extends educational engagement beyond the classroom and includes learning for professional development, personal enrichment, or other goals throughout one’s lifetime. Faculty will be expected to participate in the department’s, college’s, and university’s lifelong learning opportunities when available and may be assigned teaching responsibility in this area as part of their overall responsibilities.
Tenure line rank will be Assistant or Associate Professor. Assistant Professor candidates should have an earned doctorate or be ABD with all degree requirements to be completed by the time of appointment. Assistant Professor candidates should have teaching or teaching assistant experience and a beginning track record in scholarship with potential for funding. Associate Professor candidates should hold doctorates, have excellent teaching records, and an established research record. For either rank, we seek candidates able to contribute to interdisciplinary team science. Faculty are expected to work on campus to engage with students, colleagues, and community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Developing courses
- Teaching graduate and undergraduate students
- Developing and maintaining a research program
- Mentoring students in design and statistical analysis
- Service to the university and profession
- Contribute to a graduate program in health sciences with a specialization in biostatistics and epidemiology.
- Facilitate the development of a collaborative health science concentration with the new interdisciplinary undergraduate Data Science Bachelor of Science degree within the College of Science and Humanities.
Minimum Qualifications:
For Assistant Professor:
- Doctorate in epidemiology or related discipline or ABD with all degree requirements completed by date of appointment
- Relevant professional experience in epidemiology
- Evidence of ongoing or established scholarship
- Evidence of ability to mentor or have mentored students.
- Ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate students
- Effective oral and written communication skills
For Associate Professor:
- Doctorate in epidemiology or related discipline.
- At least three years of epidemiology-related teaching experience
- Relevant professional experience in epidemiology
- Evidence of ongoing or established scholarship
- Evidence of ability to mentor or have mentored graduate students
- Effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate in epidemiology
- Conduct research in chronic diseases, obesity, nutrition, precision nutrition, genetics, or infectious disease area
- Strong interest in interdisciplinary research
- Existing external funding or potential for external funding
- Experience in curriculum development
- Experience in online teaching
- Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds
- Active participation in professional organizations in the discipline
- Ability to promote collegiality in the professional setting.
