Job Summary
The Curator of Academic Programs is responsible for strengthening the academic role of the museum within the University by conceptualizing and developing programs and activities as curricular support for faculty and students. This position is key to helping grow capacity of service to CSULB students and for initializing several new programs that use the Museum's collection as a learning tool. This position is intended to enable faculty and staff to partner with the museum on activities that use the collection and exhibitions in new and innovative ways.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement learning programs and lessons for CSULB students that use the web-based collection database. Partner with faculty.
- With support from docents and staff, organize and oversee Plugged-In while developing stronger collaborations with LBUSD and campus.
- Supervise the production of rich media content and scholarship for database entries.
- Curate Artist Lectures and help implement Tuesday Talks lecture series.
- Collaborate with Curator of Education in the Education Department long-term planning.
Intermediate to fluent speaking, writing, reading ability in Spanish (preferred), Khmer, or Tagalog. Highly organized team player with ability to work with a variety of colleagues and vendors. Excellent technical abilities and strong management skills. Superb communication skills, both verbal and written. Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects effectively. A high degree of professionalism, close attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines. Computer literacy including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; familiarity with Embark collection database desired. Knowledge of art/museum security systems and procedures. Records maintenance skills. Ability to clearly communicate with supervisors and fellow staff. Strong interpersonal skills, collegiality toward colleagues, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively individually and as part of a team. Demonstrable skills and work history incorporating DEI&A methods and behaviors into professional practice including working relationships, leadership skills, and teaching. Computer skills helpful in lesson planning, handling emails, purchases, and in-house memos (Photoshop, illustrator, InDesign, Google Sketch Up are museum standards), and experience with Drupal. Understanding of current regulatory frameworks around objects and people including NAGPRA, FERPA, Nazi-era looted art, and AAM and ICOM guidelines and best practices.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Required Qualifications:
- Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications: - Master's or Ph.D. in art history, art education, education, museum studies or related field with at least three (3) years of museum experience and some teaching experience in a higher education capacity including volunteer, part-time, and full time experience.
- Broad understanding of contemporary art, including strong understanding of themes, cultures, and artistic trends within contemporary art, and willingness to learn about subjects and material outside established areas of expertise.
- Previous Supervisory experience.

Compensation
The targeted salary may be set as high as $5,400 per month based on experience. The salary range for this classification is $3,897 to $7,051 per month.

Time Base
Full-time temporary position until 06/30/23 with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
