Job Description

CONTRACT PERIOD: 9-, 11-, or 12- month position (negotiable, depending on duties added for Livestock Judging and/or Livestock Superintendent)

POSITION AVAILABLE: Dependent on employment months

JOB SUMMARY: Teaching Animal Science classes and coaching livestock events.

JOB DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach 27-30 credit hours (Fall and Spring) for the Animal Science program.
  • Advise students in the major.
  • Serve on university and other committees as assigned.
  • Supervise academic progress of all Livestock Judging members.
  • Efficiently manage herds/flocks and coordinate livestock activities at the OPSU school farm using best management practices. This may include the OPSU bull performance test.
  • Maintain an accurate record system for all livestock operations including the bull performance test, purchase orders, and livestock inventory.
  • Recruit students to the College of Agriculture, Science, and Nursing programs and Livestock Judging Team by visiting schools/campuses, attending camps and national livestock shows, and utilizing internet-recruiting initiatives.
  • Must have a strong work ethic and lead by example.
  • Must be a professional, credible and respected representative of the institution internally and in the community.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to act ethically and socially responsible.
  • Must be able to lift more than 50-lb. objects; frequent bending, stooping, and
  • Can be exposed to a variety of weather conditions for periods of time.Ability to communicate in a courteous manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Science, and Nursing or designee.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES, DEPENDING ON QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Serve as the Livestock Judging and/or Livestock Superintendent

Qualifications for the Livestock Judging Coach in addition to those above:

  • Experience in competitive Livestock Judging on the collegiate level (required).
  • Knowledge of collegiate Livestock Judging rules for events.
  • Experience in livestock showing and show protocols.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities for Livestock Judging Coach:

  • Coach collegiate livestock judging team(s).
  • Coordinate livestock judging workouts and practices.
  • Prepare entry forms and travel requests for contests.
  • Supervise academic progress of all Livestock Judging Team members.
  • Officiate livestock judging contests, judging fairs, and livestock shows.
  • Recruit students to the College Agriculture, Science and Nursing programs and Livestock Judging Team by visiting schools/campuses, attending camps and national livestock shows, and utilizing internet recruiting initiatives.
  • Must be a professional, credible, and respected representative of the institution internally and in the community.

Responsibilities for Livestock Superintendent:

  • Supervise and coordinate the scheduling of OPSU farm student workers.
  • Efficiently coordinate daily chores and activities on the farm. This includes but is not limited to the OPSU Bull Test and assisting in all labs for courses for which the farm and/or animals are used.
  • Cooperate with the VPASA, Dean of COASN, and university faculty to manage the OPSU livestock herds/flocks using best management practices.
  • Maintain a detailed and accurate record system for all livestock operations, including but not limited to the OPSU Bull Test, purchasing process and procedures, and livestock inventory reports.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Required: Master’s degree required in Animal Science or related field.
  • Must have 18 graduate hours in Animal Science or closely related field.
  • Preferred: PH.D preferred
