Job Description

The School of Journalism and Strategic Communication invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Center for Emerging Media Design & Development available August 2022. The teaching emphasis will be in user-centered experience design, interaction design, graphic design and web design and development.

The Center for Emerging Media Design and Development is Ball State’s interdisciplinary storytelling lab that combines human-computer interaction, usability and user experience, design thinking, and transmedia storytelling to develop innovative strategic communication projects. An in-person and hybrid-online master’s degree program and an undergraduate minor bring students from across disciplines to work collaboratively with diverse university units and their communities. Faculty research interdisciplinary topics in usability and user experience, virtual and augmented reality, prosocial communication, and socially-concerned storytelling both individually and cooperatively through the School’s Unified Research Lab. The ACEJMC-accredited School of Journalism and Strategic Communication at Ball State University offers undergraduate majors in strategic communication: advertising, strategic communication: public relations and journalism with concentrations in photojournalism, magazine media, news writing and reporting as well as graduate programs in journalism, public relations and emerging media design and development. The School is also home to the new Unified Research Lab where faculty and graduate students collaborate on research which focuses on research in eye tracking, virtual reality, psychophysiology, and gaming studies.

Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate should have the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in user experience design, usability and user experience research methods, web design, data visualization, interaction design, graphic design, and /or design thinking. The successful candidate should also be proficient in front-end web and mobile design. Knowledge of coding languages is also preferred. Teaching and advising requirements exist at multiple locations.

Minimum Qualifications:

ABD in user experience design, human-computer interaction, media informatics, information systems, computer science, visual communication or related field from an accredited institution by date of appointment; PhD from an accredited institution required within one year of appointment.
OR
MFA in user experience design, human-computer interaction, media informatics, information systems, computer science, visual communication or related field from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. or MFA in user experience design, human-computer interaction, media informatics, information systems, computer science, visual communication or other related field from an accredited institution by date of appointment; one year of professional experience in human-computer interaction, project design and client management, human-centered experience design, strategic communication or a related field; graduate-level teaching experience; record of creative endeavors with successful peer review or a scholarly research record with corresponding publications.
