Job Description

The Upper Division Advising Center within University College at Ball State University welcomes applications for the position of Academic Advisor for the Miller College of Business from individuals who are passionate about assisting undergraduate students in their journey of discovery and persistence to degree completion. Working under the direction of an Academic Advising Coordinator, this advisor will manage an assigned caseload of students and provide comprehensive academic advising and student success strategies.

The Academic Advisor for the Miller College of Business will assist the departments in endeavors related to student academic success. The advisor will guide students in understanding their degree requirements, academic policies, university procedures, and the university resources available to make informed decisions regarding their degree program. Academic Advising within University College at Ball State University is uniquely organized to serve the needs of first-year students and upper-division students. The dynamic mix of advisors and programs in each unit overlap and collaborate in activities beneficial to students and colleagues alike with an opportunity to participate in professional networks such as the Indiana Academic Advising Network (IAAN).

Position Function: Serve as the primary academic advisor to approximately 350 – 450 upper-division students holding academic majors in the Miller College of Business (MCOB); support students in understanding and meeting academic requirements; assist students in maintaining state-mandated four-year degree maps; promote strategies for student success; advise transfer students on program requirements and course equivalencies; serve as referral agent to other university services; facilitate communication between assigned students and all MCOB departments; participate in appropriate events as requested by all the Departments in MCOB, the Office of Admissions, and the Office of Orientation.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited institution by date of appointment. One year of experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or related field. Ability to work with faculty, administration, and undergraduate students; ability to work in a collaborative environment and work independently; sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, interpersonal/human relations skills; ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions; ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the university; ability to identify students’ needs for support services in order to make appropriate referrals; ability to maintain confidentiality.

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in student affairs, accounting, economics, business analytics, or related area. Experience in a higher education environment; familiarity with Ball State curriculum; familiarity with Banner, Degree Works, and Aviso.
