Financial Aid Counselor

Job Summary
The Financial Aid Counselor provides front-facing and back-end financial aid services to students and other constituents, including counseling and outreach activities designed to promote awareness and facilitate solutions related to financing the cost of education. The Counselor conducts need analysis, performs verification and packaging of student aid, makes professional judgment decisions regarding student aid eligibility and facilitates problem solving with students and parents. The position provides leadership and program oversight over an assigned area of specialty (including direction of work), adjudicates appeals, and provides training to other staff.

Key Responsibilities
• Facilitate student success by providing a broad range of student and family-facing financial aid services, including counseling and outreach activities.
• Provide leadership, program management, and serve as liaison for a programmatic area of specialization.
• Contribute to service excellence by providing decision-making support in complex situations, evaluating special circumstances and exercising professional judgment.
• Remain abreast with constantly evolving financial aid regulations (federal, state, institutional) and emerging trends and best practices in delivering service excellence.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Skills and Knowledge of financial aid (programs, policies, regulations). In-depth knowledge and understanding of current financial aid needs analysis methodology and federal and state financial aid program guidelines. Knowledge of financial aid regulations, practices, and resources. Knowledge of online student information systems. Ability to interpret, analyze, and apply financial aid & academic policies and procedures. The financial aid counselor requires a thorough understanding of the federal, state, and institutional rules governing the various forms of financial aid. Federal law is reauthorized every 5 to 6 years with regulatory changes and newlegislation inserted within those spans. State aid can change annually with each session of the legislature. Institutional costs and processes may change even more often in response to improvements and limitations to technology, approval and revisions of budget priorities, and structural organizations. Every counselor will track these changes and the affects on student awards at the University. The counselor must successfully keep abreast of technical applications of regulatory and institutional changes and use competent and increasingly complex computer system skills to meet their job requirements. Specific assigned programs may be complex and require specialized training or skills.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

Compensation
The targeted salary may be set as high as $4,304 per month based on experience. The salary range for this classification is $4,304 to $6,120 per month.

Time Base
Full-time temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
