Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director and Assistant Director, the Preschool Teacher: Is responsible for the Preschool class (children ages 2 ½ - 3 years)

Plans and implements the curriculum for the Preschool class. Assesses each child’s development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works collaboratively with the other teachers in the Preschool class to develop both individualized and interest based curriculum.
  • Maintains a rich, diverse learning environment within a safe, clean classroom.
  • Nurtures and facilitates children's physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development through developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Works individually and in small and large groups with the children, instilling a love of learning that will motivate them to want to continue to learn.
  • Responds to the children's interests and expands their interests by the provision of age appropriate projects and activities.
  • Works closely with parents, discussing their children's progress in informal conversations and formal conferences, and inviting them to participate in classroom activities.
  • Assesses each child’s developmental progress using anecdotal records, running records, and other assessment tools.
  • Partners with parents to provide high quality educational experiences to the children. Works closely with parents, discussing their children's progress in informal conversations and formal conferences, and inviting them to participate in classroom activities.
  • Supervises teachers, work-study students, graduate assistants, student teachers, and other center workers. Assists in the evaluation of center staff.
  • Attends all Children’s Learning Center special events, functions, staff meetings and workshops.
  • Involves other members of the college community in curriculum plans when appropriate.
  • Plans and attends trips and special events with other staff members.
  • Attends all staff meetings and center workshops.
  • Fulfills all required professional development hours.
  • Attends required university meetings.
  • Assists with processing new child applications and ensuring child application materials are complete and updates.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field, with at least 9 college credits in early childhood education and/or child development

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one year of experience in an early childhood education program.

REQUIRED: Letter of application, resume and contact information for three professional references.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of early childhood growth and development.
  • Knowledge of early childhood assessment.
  • Ability to plan and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum for preschool children.
  • Ability to set clear goals and objectives in planning effective lessons.
  • Ability to establish consistent classroom routines and provide reinforcement for positive attitudes and behavior.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate teacher assistants.
  • Ability to clearly communicate each child’s progress to parents verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to train and mentor student workers
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing using standard English.
  • Willing to obtain and maintain current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Some knowledge of the Reggio Emilia approach to education preferred
