Job Summary

The Director provides leadership for designing, implementing, and administering campus-wide Veteran Services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life for military service members, student veterans and eligible dependents. The position directs university services, outreach, and advocacy, as well as creates, directs, and administers special programs and services for CSULB's veteran community. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and services efforts.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and administer programs for military servicemembers, student veterans and eligible dependents.
  • Serve as primary advocate for and representative of military servicemembers, veterans, and eligible dependents on campus.
  • Coordinate the provision of services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs through the VetSuccess on Campus Program.
  • Serve as representative of CSULB Veterans Services to off-campus agencies, institutions, and organizations.
  • Manage and be accountable for departmental budget.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of military veterans issues pertaining to successful educational development; Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and system-wide mandates related to military servicemembers, veterans, and eligible dependents; Experience serving historically underrepresented, low-income, first generation, traditionally disenfranchised, and differently abled populations in diverse environments; A mindset and skillset that lends itself to the provision of excellent customer service to the campus community, vendors, and community partners. A record of successful collaboration with other organizational units toward a shared goal; Demonstrated resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem-solving skills in a variety of situations including demonstrated experience problem solving across departments and with external governing bodies; Demonstrated skill in collecting, interpreting, synthesizing, assessing, and analyzing high-level department data to make data-informed decisions and report out systematically; Proven ability to learn, interpret, apply, and develop a wide variety of university policies and procedures relating to administration standards, policies, and issues. Experience securing external grant funds and donations to enhance the support given to student Veterans; Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office 365, Adobe products, specialized education tech platforms (e.g. PeopleSoft, Banner, EAB), Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Zoom/Zoom webinar, etc. and/or the demonstrated ability to learn new platforms to a point of proficiency to ensure that incumbent will be able to prepare a wide variety of correspondence, reports, forms, agendas, advertisements and text for printed materials and web pages; Ability to coordinate events/programs;

Ability to lift boxes or items weighing 25 lbs. to and from event locations.

Working knowledge of standard safe work practices; Experience managing in a collective bargaining environment; Demonstrated commitment to the principles of shared governance.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree and a minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in a management or director position. Master's degree preferred. Previous experience providing services and programs to military servicemembers, veterans, and eligible dependents preferred.
Licenses / Certificates

Driver's license preferred.

Compensation

Salary Range: $6,286 - $9,429 per month

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Additional Information

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
