Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean and in collaboration with the Coordinator of Advising, the incumbent will be responsible for the management, development, and direction of peer-led academic support programs designed to impact student success. Primary tasks include: supporting the instructional enterprise by hiring, training, and supervising peer-learning student assistants (e.g., tutors, mentors, and learning assistants) in the SAS Tutoring and Mentoring Center, Lindgren Mathematics Tutoring Center, and CNSM academic departments employing learning assistants support in lower division mathematics and science courses; working collaboratively with faculty liaisons and student support staff to promote collaboration and participation in academic support programs; marketing these academic support programs to students; and researching and developing innovative approaches to academic support. Collaborate with CNSM faculty, staff, and campus partners in supporting outreach events, student research symposium, community building events, and academic skill building workshops. The incumbent is expected to play a critical role in CNSM efforts to improve retention and inclusive student success and will promote the principles of “growth mindset” and metacognitive learning strategies. The CNSM Student Services Professionals are sensitive to the diverse needs of each student, advocating for their success and retention as CNSM majors, and promoting the following key principles of students' academic success: dedication, communication, focus, and academic grit.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide overall coordination and planning for CNSM peer learning programs including:
- provides direct supervision and coordination of CNSM SAS Tutoring Center.
- in collaboration with faculty liaison, provides supervision and coordination of MATH Lindgren Tutoring Center.
- in collaboration with faculty liaisons, conducts recruitment, selection, and hiring, and training of peer mentors and tutors in SAS and Lindgren centers.
- in collaboration with Learning Communities Coordinator, provides training and support for peer mentors participating in Freshmen Scholars Learning Communities.
- provides logistical support and training for other CNSM peer learning programs (including math and chemistry learning assistants).
- implement strategies to maintain and improve student programs and services in the SAS Center by exercising professional skills, knowledge, judgment, persuasion, and imagination required in working with policies, students, administration, faculty, staff, and other campus community groups.
- In collaboration with the Associate Dean and faculty liaisons, develops and implements strategies for assessment of CNSM peer learning support. Participates in building the cohesive team of Student Service Professionals in CNSM via collaborations with academic advising, student research programs, health professions advising, and outreach programs. Problem-solves complex issues that arise alongside staff and faculty collaborations. Recruit and hire federal work study students as needed.
- Alongside the Coordinator of Advising, represents CNSM on various college- and university-level committees.
Ability to use professional judgment and sensitivity in confidential personnel matters. Ability to interpret and apply human resources regulations and policies. Ability to use professional judgment and sensitivity in confidential student matters. Ability to interpret and apply university regulations and policies to student situations. Familiarity with science, technology, engineering and mathematics majors or careers preferred. Ability to strategically plan and manage all aspects of a student service program, from recruitment to programming to evaluation. Knowledge of and ability to utilize counseling and student development theory and techniques in individual and group advisement settings. Knowledge of technological applications for use in higher education. Proficiency in applications for word processing, databases, spreadsheets, email, and internet software. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Blackboard, PeopleSoft database, and web management software preferred. Knowledge and understanding of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Ability to collaborate across campus units and build effective connections. Ability to use office equipment such as copier, fax, scanner, phone, computer, and data projector.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and three (3) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.
Desired Qualifications:
Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education Student Services, Teaching, or similar field. Experience in higher education; preferably in academic support.
Demonstrated understanding of best practices in designing and executing peer-learning programs. Proven ability to work across organizational boundaries and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of campus constituencies. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, student records systems and social media and web communications. Evidence of strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication, dealing with a wide variety of constituents. Evidence of strong planning and organizational skills.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
Hiring Range: $5,025 - $6,092 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training
CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month

Time Base
Full-time temporary position for two (2) years with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
