Job Summary

Perform individual and group advising for prospective and current Liberal Studies majors; be the first point of contact for Liberal Studies students; and support the operations of the Teacher Preparation Advising Center, as well as College of Education. Provide administrative support for the programs in the Department of Liberal Studies in the College of Education.
Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one advising/counseling to Liberal Studies (LS) students regarding general university policies and major requirements using current university technology with a consistent, culturally responsive, and proactive focus on student success. Stay current with all policies and technology necessary for accurate and supportive advising.
  • Perform duties associated with administration of LS programs leading to timely graduation, including using PeopleSoft and e-advising tools; basic data mining and tracking; evaluating first year and transfer course work; evaluating petitions; completing Advising Sheets, and processing Requests for Graduation, and Post-baccalaureate unit evaluations and requests; updating and revising program forms and documents; updating the website; participating in campus and off-campus outreach activities and fielding of student questions and problems. Support basic skills and subject matter reviews and determination, as needed.
  • Develop, plan, and conduct group workshops for current and prospective Liberal Studies majors during the academic year. These include First-Time, First-Year, and Transfer SOAR workshops, Liberal Studies information sessions, Mandatory Advising workshops, Outreach activities and others as needed. Collaborate closely with other CED offices in support of Outreach efforts and credential-related advising.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills. Ability to work professionally in a busy, diverse, multiple-program office. Ability to learn, interpret, apply, and clearly explain a variety of complex policies and procedures. Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and a very diverse population of students. CSULB advising experience preferred. Professional in demeanor, punctuality, attendance, communication, and customer service.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

The salary range for this classification is $4,610 to $6,556 per month.
