Job Summary

The Long Beach State Executive Athletics Director provides visionary leadership and is responsible for the administration and development of an ethical, competitive, and respected Division I intercollegiate athletic program. Under the direction of the University's Chief Financial Officer, they must foster academic success, athletic excellence, and overall welfare of the student-athlete, while promoting a positive culture of equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. They are dedicated to leading efforts in response to the university's mission and strategic priorities. The Athletic Director represents Long Beach State University and the Department in a positive manner with a high degree of integrity and quality while ensuring compliance with the mission and policies of the university and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Big West Conference, and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).
Key Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary leadership and maintain a program that is committed to the university's mission and strategic priorities.
  • Administer the overall athletic budget and management of personnel, including coaches, administrators, and support staff.
  • Develop overall revenue opportunities and relationships with constituents on and off campus, fund raising and prospect development.
  • Prioritize the measurable academic success of student-athletes, including their retention and graduation.
  • Ensure department-wide compliance with the rules and regulations for the NCAA, Big West Conference, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, and the university.
  • Serve as sports supervisor.

Demonstrated ability to develop ongoing relationships with season ticket holders, local community, and donors. Knowledge of financial and accounting statement literacy and ability to present financial summaries to key stakeholders. Ability to guide others in policy and procedures in support of the athletics department and the university. Skill to consistently achieve results, even under tough circumstances and thrive in fast-paced, high-pressure environments. Strong customer service skills over the telephone, in person, and through written communication. Must be proficient in the use of basic computer applications. This position serves as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act and Executive Order 1107. Incumbent is required to promptly report allegations of Clery qualifying crimes that occur within a campus' Clery geography.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Equivalent to five years of progressively responsible experience in a senior athletic administration position required.
  • Prior NCAA Division I collegiate or professional athletics preferred.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
