Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job

The Department of Human Sciences at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) invites applications from a diverse group of qualified candidates for a tenure-track 9-month appointment as an Assistant/Associate Professor in Interior Design and Program Area Coordinator beginning in Spring or Fall 2023.

The Department of Human Sciences is one of three departments and the School of Nursing in the College of Health Sciences, and the Interior Design program is one of four undergraduate programs in the department. The department offers a B.S., B.A., and minor in Interior Design and holds accreditation from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

The department and design program is housed in the historic three-story Margaret Lea Houston Building which includes a freshman design lab, a recently renovated digital design and drafting lab, a newly constructed senior interior design studio in partnership with Haworth/FMG, and a new design resource lab.

The department is seeking a visionary and inspirational leader to drive the future direction of the interior design program with collaboration and innovative approaches to inspire the next generation of design professionals.

This candidate will direct efforts as the Program Area Coordinator for the CIDA-Accredited program in Interior Design. Responsibilities of the position include:
    • Teaching undergraduate courses at all levels of the Interior Design program.
    • Overseeing the program accreditation processes and reviews and contributing to ongoing program evaluation and improvement.
    • In collaboration with faculty and leadership, oversee the recruitment and retention process.
    • Ensure that the vision and program direction are aligned with the mission of the Department and contribute to program assessment efforts.
    • Oversee curriculum development, review, and update the undergraduate course catalog annually.
    • Coordinate course offerings, scheduling, and faculty teaching assignments in collaboration with department leadership.
    • Mentoring design students
    • Maintaining and overseeing design labs and equipment.
    • The successful candidate will be responsible for fostering and maintaining industry relationships and bi-annual advisory board meetings to help students with networking, and internships, and to stay ahead of current industry and workforce trends in design.
    • Maintaining scholarly/creative activities in interior design or related fields of study.
    • Providing program, department, college, university, and professional service.

This appointment will include preparing and writing the self-study reports for the ID program’s CIDA and NASAD re-accreditation site visits. The Program Coordinator is responsible to assure that the program activities integrate effectively and efficiently with the mission, vision, and overall operations of the department. The coordinator is responsible to assure that the program meets the accreditation criteria established by the CIDA and NASAD.

LOCATION:

There are multiple options for places to live near our campuses. The city of Huntsville is nestled in the East Texas Piney Woods and is centrally located on a direct route between Houston and Dallas. With a population of roughly 40,000 (excluding SHSU), Huntsville offers the simplicity of small-town life and easy access to surrounding larger cities including Conroe, The Woodlands, and Bryan/College Station. Full of Texas history and charm, this county seat is home to multiple museums, annual festivities, antique stores, year-round outdoor activities, vineyards, golf courses, lakes, and a beautiful state park. In a little over an hour after leaving the main campus, you can arrive in downtown Houston. Houston has consistently ranked as one of the most diverse cities in America and as one of the best “foodie” cities. It provides access to large entertainment venues and art museums. If you prefer life on the water, Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston are a short commute, and Galveston Island and the Gulf coast are a two-hour drive.


Educational Requirements for the Position

Applicants must have a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Interior Design or a closely related field (Architecture, Interior Architecture, Environmental Design). The undergraduate degree must be in interior design.

Experience Required for the Position

Required, Rank of Assistant Professor:
    • A minimum of three years of full-time professional work experience in design is required.
    • NCIDQ certification is required.
    • Proficiency and ability to teach AutoCAD, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suite is required.
    • A request for prior service credit of up to three years in a tenure-track/tenured position must be requested and approved before hire.

Required, Rank of Associate Professor:
To be considered for the rank of Associate Professor, the applicant must meet the above qualifications.
  • Additionally, the applicant should demonstrate evidence as a teacher/scholar with excellence in teaching, research/creative authority and an academic reputation in the field as appropriate for the position.
  • To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, a candidate must be appointed as an Associate Professor at the time of application and currently tenured at a comparable institution. Any request for tenure upon appointment must be approved before hire.

Other Requirements for the Position

Preferred requirements:
  • Prior interior design program leadership or other related leadership experience is preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare design is preferred.
  • Experience in Rhino, Escape, and 3D printing is preferred.
  • Experience with the CIDA accreditation process and preparation of self-study reports is also preferred.
  • Membership in at least one of the following professional organizations: IDEC, IIDA, ASID, or AIA is preferred.
  • Additional credentials/certifications in any one or more of the following: LEED-AP, AAHID, WELL-AP, or EDAC is preferred.
