Nature & Purpose of Position:
Provide assistance to ensure that students eligible for Veterans Administration (VA) educational benefits and the Hazlewood Waiver are afforded every opportunity to receive their entitlements in a timely and appropriate manner.
Primary Responsibilities:
Duties include but are not limited to the following: Provides personalized customer service at the highest level. This position will support the Veterans Resource Center at the front counter. Phone coverage is expected as well as responses to emails submitted through the veteran’s mailbox. Performs receptionist duties, directs phones and walk-in customers, and schedules appointments. Research questions and responds to customer inquiries. Assists with counseling military-connected students regarding the utilization of their VA educational benefits and the Hazlewood Act Waiver. Inform them of program requirements, rules, policies, and procedures for certification of VA educational benefits and the Hazlewood Act Waiver. Assists with the interpretation, verification, and application of rules and regulations necessary to certify military-connected students for educational benefits. Performs complex clerical functions including data and document processing. Inputs data and ensures the accuracy of information. Performs quality control checks to ensure compliance with regulations. Prepares, reviews, revises, and distributes reports, documents, and correspondence. May be required to assist with the certification of the enrollment of veterans, dependents, and members of the National Guard reserve forces utilizing VA educational benefits and the Hazlewood Act Waiver during peak periods. May supervise work-study students which includes participating in the hiring of work-study students and determining work priorities. Solves routine problems to complete tasks of a repetitive nature. Receives and distributes mail. Interprets policies and procedures. Attends meetings. Requires some experience and the occasional use of independent judgment. Occasionally, may be required to work weekends or special events. Strong team collaboration skills are required. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications:
During peak workloads, telephone periods and emails may be extensive. Requires ability to work at the front counter, encountering students, parents, etc. Demonstrate strong oral, written, interpersonal, and team-building skills. Express commitment to serving students. Ability to concentrate in quiet and distracting environments. Ability to apply complex regulations to individual situations. Demonstrate knowledge of military organizations, documents, and issues affecting veteran students. Seeks guidance as needed. Capable of maintaining confidentiality and understanding the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Complies with all state and federal mandates, as well as university policies. Dependability is crucial. Occasional travel may be required. Computer skills required.
Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
