Educational Requirements for the Position

Bachelor’s degree in health, public health or a related field is required. A Master’s degree is desirable. Four years of experience in a related field. Supervisory experience and two years of experience in higher education and/or prevention programming is preferred. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.

Nature & Purpose of Position

Plans, organizes, and directs the day-to-day operations of the Office of Health Promotion with the oversight of the Director. Performs complex managerial work providing direction and guidance in strategic operations and planning in the Office of Health Promotion.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsible for the managing, developing, and promoting of an integrated health and wellness culture for SHSU. Works collaboratively with the Student Health Center (SHC) and Division of Student Affairs as well as other departments across campus to plan, research, implement, evaluate and support health education strategies, interventions and programs. Programming is provided to individuals, small groups, classrooms, departments and other communities within SHSU as indicated. Works to develop relationships with external community agencies and organizations to benefit the SHSU students and Office of Health Promotion (OHP) programming efforts. Develops and maintains the OHP budget to include programming initiatives, operating expenses, travel expenses and personnel expenses. Shares responsibility in recruiting, hiring, and personnel management. Responsible for departmental structure and growth planning. Initiates and holds relevant department staff meetings and reports to the SHC Director as indicated. Conducts annual performance reviews on all OHP department staff. Reviews and approves timesheets/leave reports on all OHP department staff. Ensures that the OHP programming is in line with American College Health Association (ACHA) initiatives and Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) standards. Participates in the AAAHC survey process representing the OHP department. Represents the SHSU community in local and regional health related committees and organizations (as indicated). Ensures that the Office of Health Promotion maintains a vision and strategic plan that aligns with the Student Affairs mission, vision and goals. Keeps abreast of health education principles and public health issues that directly affect the college age population. Develops, implements, coordinates and evaluates a variety of health promotion initiatives for the campus community based on sound theory and evidence based practices of college health promotion. Organizes and develops creative methods of educating students on wellness and health. Creates and disseminates marketing and other informational materials for health promotion utilizing print and electronic media. Engages the students in a peer based model of health promotion and serves as a resource to the Peer Health Advocates (PHA) group. Serves as a resource to the Student Health Center staff. Creates and coordinates campus wide alcohol, tobacco and other drugs programming. Maintains a social media presence and up to date web page. Collects data on student’s behaviors, habits, and perceptions regarding health topics. Analyzes collected data for reporting and program planning. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications

Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws. Ability to manage business functions. Communicates with other university departments, personnel, and other agencies. Some evenings and weekends may be required for events and program delivery.

Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
