Educational and Experience Requirement:

Bachelor’s degree in related field. Two (2) years of previous work experience in international education, immigration advisement, international travel, study abroad, academic advisement, or a related field. Preference will be given to individuals with experience as a Designated School Official (DSO), Alternate Responsible Officer/Responsible Offer (ARO/RO), or who have worked in some capacity with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Familiarity with the Student and Exchange Visitor System (SEVIS) and the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is strongly preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered. Individuals with overseas travel or living experience, along with those from historically underrepresented groups, are encouraged to apply.

US citizenship or permanent residency is required due to the nature of the position.

Nature & Purpose of Position:

Advises international students, scholars, and foreign national faculty members on issues related to visa status, as well as academic support needs. Coordinates international student orientations, seminars, and workshops. Serves as the staff advisor for the International Student Organization. Provides additional support to the Office of International Programs for international student admissions, international partnerships, and student activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

May include, but not necessarily limited to the following: In collaboration with the Principal Designated School Official, the International Student and Scholar Advisor provides guidance and assistance to all international (F-1) and visa-holding students in the United States regarding cross-cultural and immigration issues and concerns while they attend Sam Houston State University. In addition to maintaining student records, the ISS Advisor will provide programing opportunities for international students, advise the International Student Organization, and inform international students of opportunities to connect with SHSU events. The ISS Advisor will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and update the Student and Exchange Visitors Information System (SEVIS) database as well as provide information to students regarding Social Security cards, and other needed documents. In collaboration with the PDSO, the ISS Advisor will supervise and monitor the status of all undergraduate and graduate international students from admission through graduation. The ISS Advisor will work closely with the Study Abroad Office on incoming exchange students and their process. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

Establishes contacts with other university departments, personnel, and outside agencies and individuals as required. Interprets University policies governing area of responsibility.

This position may be designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).

Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
