Educational Requirements for the Position
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Recreation Sports Administration, Sports Management, Business, Student Personnel Services, or related field. Two years supervisory experience in recreation or related field. Prior collegiate experience preferred. Graduate Assistant experience is applicable. Must have current CPO (Certified Pool Operator), Lifeguard/First Aid, and CPR/AED Trainer, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, LGI (Lifeguard Training Instructor) and WSI (Water Safety Instructor) certifications. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Responsible for the administration, planning, supervision and operation of the Recreational Sports swimming pool (182,000). Collaborate with the staff of the University Camp including waterfront activities and the U Camp pool. Position will oversee the development and implementation of aquatic programming. The position will also be required to monitor and reconcile assigned program budget and oversee safety aspects and risk management for the department.
Primary Responsibilities
Assists in guiding the Aquatics area in a manner consistent with the goals of the Recreational Sports Department, Division of Student Affairs, and the mission of Sam Houston State University. Teaches and coordinates First Aid and CPR/AED training for the department, including the recruitment of other ARC certified instructors to assist with these classes. Provides suggestions for other areas in the department on how to maintain their own employee database for keeping up with Student certifications. Responsible for appearance/maintenance needs of the aquatic areas; maintaining appropriate records, and general problem-solving issues. Position is responsible for aquatic area student supervisors and training them as needed to include Emergency Preparedness Drills, Swim & Tread, FA/CPR/AED skills check-off, and evaluation. Reviews the needs of all aquatic areas with regards to safety and recommend any equipment needs, staffing, training and operational procedure changes to the Associate Director. Oversees lifeguard training and in-service. Schedules lifeguards, water safety instructors, and other student employees, such as maintenance staff. Manages all aspects of the RSC pool, including pool operations, working with vendors, budgeting, contracts, aquatic programming, and coordinating staffing efforts required to support the program. Monitors and reconciles program budget. Promotes the Recreational Sports Department aquatics program through various on-campus advertising opportunities. Oversees most aspects of the aquatic website. Maintains statistical information, including annual, monthly, individual reports, and record patron participation in the aquatics program area. Maintains payroll for assigned student employees, including lifeguards, pool managers, and operational assistants. Develops assessment instruments for aquatics program area. Provides oversight and management of possible American Red Cross Health and Safety classes. Develops collaborative relationships with affiliated departments and support recruiting initiatives by other departments. Collaborates with other Recreational Sports Department personnel in conducting aquatic workshops and clinics to support the mission of Recreational Sports. Serves as a risk management resource for other areas in the department. Provides suggestions and recommendations for risk management practices currently in place by other department areas. May participate in Risk Assessment Exercise(s) for the department. Responsible for maintaining equipment, pool chemicals, and inventory used within the aquatic area. Travels to the University Camp and oversee lifeguard schedules for our traditions camp (Bearkat Camp) as well as occasionally taking the lifeguard stand while at Bearkat Camp. Assist University Camp supervisor with pool operations and maintenance. Assists the Johnson Coliseum supervisor with hot and cold tub operations (Hydroworx). Performs other related duties as assigned.
Position requires driving and operating a university vehicle; therefore, a valid Texas driver license and driver record acceptable to the university’s insurance carrier is required.
Other Specifications
Must demonstrate organizational, administrative skills, outstanding interpersonal skills, and computer experience. Must be self-motivated with the ability to multitask and complete projects and assignments within appropriate time lines. Must be dedicated to students’ development as part of the department’s mission. Working hours may vary as required including evening and weekend work. Regular exposure to pool chemicals.
